• Many of the cattle are still out .... it is lovely for them to be enjoying the freedom in the fields for as long as possible ....

The grass is pretty poor now so we are feeding them silage in the field. It isn’t actually very good for the soil to do this, so we try and pick drier ground and we don’t move the feeders around too much so we limit the damage.

  • We have had to bring the cows and calves in because some will be calving relatively soon ....

We need to wean the babies off the mums - and you don’t want to do that outside because the babies will find a way through any fence to get back to their mums. The mums seem rather relieved to have some time to themselves! And they are happy to be lying on lovely deep straw beds with delicious silage to munch on.

  • Munching away on silage ....

The calves - all around eight months old - settle after just a few days and tuck into their silage with great gusto!

  • Peace and quiet ....

The calves have lived together all Summer so form a very contented group and are happy to enjoy some relaxation time!

  • Salt lickin' good!

We always ensure the cattle have access to salt licks and you can see from the photo how much they enjoy them!

  • This is Fred ....

Fred looks after everyone - he loves it when the cattle are in because silage bales give him a great vantage point to survey his domain!
